Functional Neurology
What is functional neurology?
Functional neurology is the clinical science of treating the brain and body through the way it was designed to function – sensory inputs. Our brains job is to respond to the environment. Stimuli such as touch, stretch, movement, light, sound or smell are what ultimately drive all brain functions. Rather than affecting the brain through the tools of medical neurology: drugs and/or surgery, chiropractic neurology utilizes natural pathways to improve function and increase adaptability and cellular viability to decrease the effects of aging, injury or degenerative changes on future health.
Why choose Chiropractic?
The goal of holistic healthcare is not the treatment of specific conditions, but the analysis and improvement in function of the entire person as a whole using natural and safe interventions. In addition to helping manage problems, functional neurology is particularly well positioned to help individuals optimize function for well-being and the prevention of injuries and/or future degenerative changes.
That being said, we never escape the question of ‘what conditions can you help’? The (right brain answer) is this: If the nervous system is playing a role in the condition, then there is a good chance that functional neurology and chiropractic can be of benefit. The beauty of functional neurology is that if we can improve the pathways involved, we should see immediate changes in the findings following a therapeutic intervention.
More specifically (left brain answer), Dr. Herold enjoys aiding people struggling with migraine or other complex headaches, vertigo and dizziness, balance problems, acute or chronic pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy/complex regional pain syndrome, whiplash/motor vehicle accidents, TMJ issues, repetitive injuries, arthritis, movement disorders, muscle spasms or weakness, tingling or numbness, brain or peripheral nerve conditions, behavior and mood disorders, anxiety & depression.
Why Choose Functional Neurology?
Functional Neurology is a discipline that uses natural means to fix problems with the brain and its relationships with the rest of the body. The doctor first identifies regions of the brain or other aspects of the nervous system that are not functioning well. Then, utilizing natural sensory inputs into those weakened systems, the functional neurologist can help strengthen those areas and restore lost vitality. It is, simply put, exercise and therapy for optimizing brain function.
Functional neurologists require extensive post-graduate training in diagnosis and conservative treatment methodologies for the management of non-emergency neurological issues and post-injury rehabilitation.
This cutting-edge field is constantly adapting (as any healthy organism must) with changes in scientific knowledge about how the brain works as well as introducing or adapting novel therapeutic approaches for specific problems.
Neurology and Chiropractic
Functional neurology is a blending of many disciplines such as medical neuroscience, physical and occupational therapy, audiology, optometry, psychology and of course the science and philosophy of chiropractic.
The heart of chiropractic philosophy:
• Innate Intelligence: All living organisms have the ability to grow, heal themselves and adapt to a changing environment. Biologists call this the Law of Homeostasis.
• Nervous system as master control system: For animals, the brain/central nervous system controls and coordinates every function of that organism. The nerve, hormone and immune systems form a single functional system that dictates the responses of every cell in the body to changes in the environment, allowing for adaptation and survival.
• Proper function requires precise information: A disruption to the ability of the nervous system to convey accurate information will affect health by limiting the body’s capacity to adapt to stress. Changes in nerve tone can convey either incorrect information from the body to the brain or can distort commands from the brain to the body. This kind of dysfunction leads to breakdown of normal function and subsequent disease or ill health.
• Improving structure improves function, and visa versa. Engineering teaches that form follows function. A change in alignment of the body away from optimum alters the functional capacity of the joints, muscles and related structures. This results in changes in feedback to the brain through changes in nerve signals. Subluxations (misalignments) can be primary in nature (such as from an injury) or symptoms of altered brain or nerve function (aka joint position errors). Care that corrects subluxations and improves posture will benefit the individual by allowing better function because the brain will then get more accurate information about the body and its relationship between self and the environment.
Investigating the neurological or other physiological causes of most subluxations or other imbalances and applying functional neurology and its additional therapeutic tools impact the likelihood of correcting the underlying cause of the dysfunction, ensuring a more complete recovery and help prevent the return of old patterns.
In short, optimizing structure allows for better adaptability to stress, giving you greater health capacity, less pain, fewer injuries, improved vitality and a better quality of life!
